Writer's Checklist

Look on your outline handout.
Use the checklist on the back to think about your own writing.

Peer Revision

  • Highlight your partner's thesis statement. Does it take a strong position? Is it a layer 3 idea that can be applied to the world and NOT "This text is about...."
  • Highlight the topic sentences in your partner's body paragraphs. Do they showcase his or her own ideas and writing technique (his/her own words)? Does each one support his/her thesis statement?

Example:
In the article titled "An American Role-Reversal: Women the New Breadwinners" from USA Today, Author Dennis Cauchon proves that .........
My own experience has taught me that......

  • Underline your partner's text evidence sentences. Do they have quotes embedded? Did he/she choose the best text evidence to clearly demonstrate the point? Does he/she have at least two?
  • Bracket [ ] your partner's commentary/explanation sentences. Did he/she provide thorough explanation of the significance or meaning of each piece of text evidence? With the commentary, did he/she tightly connect all text evidence to the point of each paragraph and the overall thesis statement?

Now go through the checklist on the outline for your partner's paper. Make revisions to help your partner have a great piece of writing!
YOU are responsible for keeping up with this sheet! You will have to turn it in with your final draft. Use your partner's ideas to re-evaluate your writing and do revision. On Tuesday we will type final drafts on blogs together. If you have a computer at home, it would be advisable to type your essay ahead of time and save it on a flash drive, dropbox, or email.
